Regular General Meeting

October 10, 2011
Chili Daddys (419 E Michigan Avenue) provided the before meeting meal.
7:04 PM President Mark Jansen called the meeting to order. A quorum was present. Earl Livingston was Sergeant of Arms.
Guest Speaker: Mary Hurley spoke on the store that will be taking the place of the Albertsons on Orange and Michigan. Currently she is working with Wal-Mart and she will know for sure December 14, 2011, if they will be building a store in that location. The Wal-Mart would only be a grocery store, to be opened 2013. Wal-Mart would carry a lease on the land for 25 years.
In addition to Wal-Mart, Mary reported that the some of the existing store fronts would be receiving new roofs and facades. There is a possibility that the existing Publix in the shopping complex would also be doing some renovations to keep up with the new look to the area.
Business Meeting:
Mark Jensen reported that Wadeview Park would be holding a Truck or Treat, October 28, 2011, in the evening. A Halloween Dance sponsored by the city will be held the same evening in the Wadeview Park meeting building.
Old Business
Minutes: Minutes will be approved once the newsletter is printed and the secretary gets the minutes ready to be printed.
Treasurer’s Report: No report was given.
C.O.P.: Earl Livingston reported that there is graffiti once again in the park. The city knows of this and is attempting to clean it up. Crime is down due to surveillance by the police and prompt reporting of suspicious people by the neighbors.
Downtown South: Holly Venture reported that the Jingle Jam that will be held December 3, 2011, in the parking lot next to Chick-Fil-A. Businesses and private people can set up booths. There is also going to be a new Win the Window. Information will be following.
News Letter: Mark reported that teacher that we were working with at Boone is no longer there. Due to all the work involved in getting the newsletter compiled and printed he is looking at having the Newsletter come out every other month.
School: Dot reported that Kaley Elementary has a new principal, Dr. Becky Barnett. Kaley will be celebrating its 75 Anniversary in November. She explained how Kaley was build during the Depression, using bricks from the streets of Orlando. Due to the school’s unique history, OCPS is committed to keeping the school is good condition.
Special Needs: We will discuss the Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets at the next meeting. The baskets will be used for Blakner families.
New Business
Louanne Fussell reported that your neighborhood Kiwanis Club of South Orlando will again host the Annual KCSO Turkey Smoke! Tuesday the 22nd and Wednesday the 23rd, right before Thanksgiving, they will be Smokin’ your turkeys, ham, or whatever you bring. We smoke, package, cool and have ready for same day pickup. Tickets are $10 to smoke any one item. They will clean your thawed bird, smoke to perfection, wrap, box and cool down for your same day pickup. Tickets are available to purchase a smoked turkey again this year. $25 ticket for a 10-12 pound bird and $45 for a 20-22 pound smoked bird. They buy the bird, clean, smoke, wrap and box for you.
December 10th, a Saturday morning, the Johnson Family and the Kiwanis Club of South Orlando will hold the annual Johnson Family/Kiwanis Bike Build. Each year Johnson family members, friends and coworkers are joined by KCSO members and friends to build bikes and toddler ride on toys for distribution to the US Marine Corps Toys for Tots, area charities and schools. Volunteers meet at the Clubhouse Saturday morning about 9:30am. Lunch is provided. Donations to purchase bikes are now being accepted. We are able to build 300 bikes in under 5 hours so the more donations given, more bikes purchased and built, more happy faces for Christmas!

Meeting was adjourned at 8:04 PM and volunteers cleaned the room and stacked the furniture.
